If you are a caricaturist or you are a budding caricaturist, here are a few tips which will hold you in good stead:
You should find at least 6 or more pictures of the person you want to caricature. This is
important as this will allow you to get the likeness as well as it will help you to get an exaggeration of whatever needs to be exaggerated. You should concentrate on those creases or those lines of their face or their form.
You should study the features, and on that basis, you should identify what are the deviations which are there from the normal. You should be able to catch whatever is unique and what deviates from the ideal face. This will help you to better reproduce the exaggerations and at the same time get a proper likeness.
You should remember deviations could be in different forms. It could be in size or shape or look. The top two or three features should be concentrated on and worked upon.
The look in the eyes is the most important. If the eyes are not alive, the drawing, however, good it may be, is not worth it. It should look real as eyes are the windows to the soul. You should not exaggerate the eyes except if you most certainly need to as they are the crux of the person’s features.
When you see people, you should see their caricatures rather than the person who is in front. This will help you to transform the likeness into caricatures in a short time. You need to remember that a caricature artist usually does around six pictures an hour, and so has very little time to think and evaluate as well as rework. This will already be a quick method to get you started up on speed.
